DYCD/CUNY PAR: PROPOSED INTERVIEW PROTOCOL QUESTIONS

Read the consent form aloud to the interviewee and then remind them:

  1. They do not have to answer any questions that make them uncomfortable.
  2. They can choose to use a pseudonym for the interview.
  3. They can remain nameless and only archive a transcript of the recording.
  4. They can decide at the conclusion of the interview what level of donation they want to make.
  5. We have allotted 60 minutes for these interviews and will cover 5 areas:
    • The work; (2) COVID-19; (3) Supports; (4) Racial Justice & (5) Conclusions

COVID19

  • How are you coping with the pandemic?
  • How has the pandemic impacted the socio-emotional health of participants you serve?
    • What are the biggest needs for the folks you work with?
    • What is your program doing to address these needs?
  • How has the pandemic impacted the financial health of participants you serve?
    • What are the biggest needs for the folks you work with?
    • What is your program doing to address these needs?
  • How has the pandemic impacted your role and the work you do?
    • In what ways has your workplace met, or not met the challenges of the last year?
  • Is there anything you learned about yourself and/or the people you work with since the beginning of this crisis?
  • How did you, your colleagues and participants try to overcome the challenges of the last year?
  • Has there been anything positive to come out of the pandemic for you, your colleagues, or participants?
    • If so, how has it been positive?
  • Are there ways that you believe the field of youth development should permanently shift as a result of what we have been through and learned during the pandemic?

Supports

  • Your program is funded by the Department of Youth and Community Development.What was your experience like with the Department of Youth and Community Development during the crisis?
  • Are there things that your program or your constituents needed, but haven’t been receiving from the city during this pandemic?
    • Were there things that you needed, but had not been receiving from the City before the pandemic?
  • What specific supports did you receive from DYCD. Were they helpful?
  • What could DYCD do to better support you or your program?
  • Retention of youth workers is a huge issue in afterschool. What did your supervisors/organizations do to support you in your role and professionally?
  • How do you see youth and youth workers being involved in the effort to rebuild?

Racial Justice & BLM Protest

  • How has the community where you work been impacted by the racial uprising that took off after the murder of George Floyd?
    • What has changed since the racial uprisings that took in the Summer of 2020?
    • Did you notice a change with the young people concerning their racial consciousness? How so?
    • Did you notice a change with the staff at your workplace concerning their racial consciousness? How so?
    • What racial justice work is needed in your workplace?

  • Is there anything I should have asked that I didn’t ask?
  • Are you still comfortable donating this oral history?
  • Are there any restrictions you’d like to place on this testimony?
